Day 9 - New arrival

We had one heck of a storm yesterday. It started around 1:30 pm and raged all night. When we woke up to feed the babies this morning, low and behold what did we find but that one of our pregnant mums have given birth sometime in the night! Ladies and gentlemen meet Fem!

"Fem" translates to "five" in Danish. Named thusly because she had
an unmistakable 5 on her forehead when I went out to visit and also
because her mum has 5 teats instead of the standard 4.
She is still getting her land legs but she is such a sweetie. She just had to come and say hello.
Also today, I finished my first round of planting! My strawberry box, that I built with my own hands using a hammer, nails and a table saw, turned out beautifully. :-) My rows are more or less straight, and I only killed one courgette, and really I think that was more due to the storm than my black thumb. So now I water and wait. I think I'm going to tackle compost bins in the near future since I seem to have a certain inbred knack for the table saw. Here was the plot at the end of the day.
Strawberries, 3 types of peas, broccoli, 3 kinds of cauliflower,
green cucumbers, courgette (squash), peppers and celery.

  1. Look at you Ms. Green thumb! When other gardeners start to describe what they've planted in the number of varieties there are (3 kinds of cauliflower, etc), I start to feel that maybe my childhood wasn't so weird after all. Because see, it IS fun to say you have 8 kinds of tomatoes growing and 5 varieties of squash and know what they all look/taste like!! =) Ps. I love that you're saying courgette now. Have they gotten you on 'aubergine' yet too? ^^

  2. Oh, Sweet Baby Fem! How precious is that?! Your garden looks and sounds AMAZING! Have you planted any spinach or chard seeds yet? You might even want to put out starts if you can find them. Your strawberry box looks great, too! I'm so proud of you!

  3. Tobias will be thrilled at the Danish presence in the bovine population of NZ. Way to represent. Also, the goat head looks marvellous, though perhaps you should get him a sun hat and some sunnies to protect his eye holes from the harsh NZ rays :)

  4. Ah ha ha ha! I will see what I can do about the hat. I think I heard him complaining about his skin drying out the other day.

Mum, I haven't planted spinach or chard yet. We picked up seeds yesterday at the store so I'm thinking I will try and get them in today. :-) We'll see how the day progresses.

And Ev, the aubergines have not stuck in my vocabulary yet. -grins

  5. Dad here. What is Summer ranch hand been doing home on the range? Have you been fishing yet in that beautiful river, and if the answer is, "Yes!" then what did you catch, if anything? I just finished mowing the yard and I do believe we are turning the corner on fall. I visited Grandma Mathis this afternoon and she is progressing with her physical therapy, rather painfully. I told her, "No pain no gain." I`m not sure she appreciated that factoid. Ha! Her sister,Rhea, is here for awhile to help in her recovery. I`ve miss hearing from my little Sum! We keep you on a high alert status so we don`t miss out on your words of adventure and experiences.Luv and Hugs,Daddy Bear.

  6. Hi, Sweetheart! Have you checked your email lately? What's been happening on your side of the world? Had a close encounter of the Yellow Jacket kind and ended up with 4 stings complete with swelling. Seems they have an underground hideout in my oregano. Who knew? Pays to keep a wary eye out when the bees/wasps/yellow jackets buzzzzzzz! Ouch!
    Love you Angel! Mommy oxoxoxoxoxo
